Low Sodium School Lunch Ideas

Here are my first 5 school lunch ideas for under 400mg sodium (check the labels please and make sure of your brands sodium count). Not all are healthy per say but definitely kid friendly. People with kidney disease are on all different types of restriction so please make sure this fits with your doctor's orders.

Grilled REAL cheddar cheese sandwich (not processed stuff but 1oz slices REAL cheddar) grilled in unsalted butter, grapes, chocolate soy milk

1/2 large bagel with low fat cream cheese and 1 slice chopped cooked bacon (turkey or low sodium), orange slices, chocolate soy milk

English muffin pizza (made with no salt tomato sauce & pizza seasoning) topped with 1oz shredded mozzarella cheese, served with spinach and green leaf salad including chopped hard boiled egg, and water (my kids won't eat cooked spinach but they love the spinach leaves). My son loves an olive oil/vinegar blend dressing (we send it in a small container on the side so he can pour on at lunch time)

Black bean & brown rice burrito (cook up a batch of dry black beans, save some for other dishes.) Cody likes black beans, add the brown rice and cumin, garlic powder and 2 Tbsp salsa - heat on stove. We add a little water to "hold" the ingredients together. Serve with carrot sticks and homemade hummus

PB & J sandwich, applesauce, 2 chocolate chip cookies (check the labels and make sure you get the smaller, lower sodium ones)

When school starts, I will be sure to post pictures of what I send with him that week along with measurements. Send lots of fresh fruits and veggies as fillers - this prednisone makes him HUNGRY!!!!

Have a good day everyone! :)

It's good to see this site, there need to be more of them as it is so hard to find information. My daughter was diagnosed with Nephrotic Syndrome earlier this year. Here is our site.

These are great meal ideas. Thanks for posting this. I'm sure it will be helpful for those who are new to this journey.

I have a six year old son who was diagnosed at 2 years old with Nephrotic Syndrome. He is Prednisone respondant, and has been nearly three years with only one relapse.

He relapsed over and over for the first couple of years. Just when he was finally tapered off, up the counts would go in a few weeks. It was terrible!

We added raw milk to our diet, which helped a lot, then I discovered that if I have him take a chopped-up small clove of garlic with some raw honey or homemade applesauce anytime I see his protein elevate it comes right back down. He hasn't relapsed since I discovered this. *insert happy dancing Mommy smilie*.

Your son looks great and I hope that he is able to stay off the nasty Prednisone!

mohammad naim - The biopsy doesn't help you feel better but it helps the doctors diagnose if the Nephrotic Syndrome is due to IgA Nephropathy. It helps them determine treatment and give you a long term prognosis. There isn't any lasting side effect after the biopsy you just need to lay flat on back for awhile, Cody laid flat the whole day and night after having it done. How old is your sister? Regarding meals, each person is given a different amount of sodium they can have depending on their NS and what is causing it. Cody had to eat less than 1200 mg of sodium per day. Hope this helps and good luck!!!
